Every day during the Christmas holidays we are profiling the winners of the recent Director of the Year Awards. Paul Bennett, chairman, BSSEC, won the New Chartered Director award
This category celebrates the best new chartered director elected in the past 12 months, based on the marks and grades achieved through the examination process. This year, top marks quite literally go to Paul Bennett of commercial energy efficiency company BSSEC – a thoroughly deserved award for a lot of hard work. Here he talks skills, inspiration and government…
When did you first spot your entrepreneurial skills? Age 16, working as an apprentice electrician, I saw many opportunities to improve working practice efficiency – this has never left me.
How has your leadership style changed? I used to think it was about what skills I possessed to do the job, but now I realise it’s about bringing together people who have a range of skills to do the job. Surround yourself with capable, likeable, highly skilled people.
Who’s the most inspiring business person? Lord Sugar – he also inspires my children, who love The Apprentice.
What are your thoughts on Brexit? It can be a huge distraction, but I’m carrying on noting opportunities and risks.
What should the government do for business in 2017? Reduce corporation tax to attract inward investment.
How do you relax? Wild camping – it’s the best 24-hour therapy. You escape from phones and emails and meet nature face to face. It’s so re-energising – and it’s free.
