Lysanne Currie Director magazineEarlier this month, I went to Bogotá as a guest of NH Hotels. We were celebrating its acquisition of Latin American chain Hoteles Royal which has catapulted NH to a market-leading position in the Colombian capital.

It was a high-profile event, with the keynote speech coming from the nation’s president, Juan Manuel Santos, who complimented the Spanish firm’s leadership. It must have been a proud moment for NH chief executive, Federico J González Tejera, who joined the ailing business from Disneyland Paris in 2012.

Tejera is now just over a year into a five-year turnaround strategy and on track not only to restore the business to health, but to make it number one in multiple territories.

I interviewed Tejera about his time at NH and he seemed to encapsulate the attributes necessary for today’s leader – a global view, collaboration (his top advice for leaders looking to set up in Colombia – “partner with a local”) and his simple but effective recipe for reaching his goals: “If you combine ambition with dreams and rigour then success is a given.”

It’s a philosophy shared by many of the leaders we have spoken to for this issue.

Entrepreneur Ian Jones had what many thought was an impossible dream – to rescue the Goonhilly Earth Station from being demolished by owners BT. Read how he did it – with a mixture of gall, optimism and help from VCs on p42.

Director Magazine October 2015 issuePCA Predict’s founders (p36) bootstrapped their start-up themselves – “15k a month out of our back pockets kept us focused” – and they now have more than 10,000 customers including Nescafé, Hotel Chocolat and Tesco Direct.

Tejera’s philosophy is also one Sir Michael Moritz would recognise, as he discusses his book (p21) on leadership, co-written with fellow knight, Sir Alex Ferguson.

Finally, it’s a mantra that cover star Margaret Casely-Hayford would adhere to (p30).

After an illustrious spell in law, she moved to a portfolio career – she is chair of ActionAid UK and on the boards of the NHS and the Metropolitan Police. She has rigour, ambition and is making her dream of changing the business world’s landscape a reality.

I hope you enjoy the issue, and have a great month.
