Nicholas Coleridge on the cover of Director magazine in June

Nicholas Coleridge, president of Condé Nast International, is Director magazine’s June cover star. Here editor Lysanne Currie previews what’s inside the new issue – out now in print and ready to download to Android and iPad apps…

Out of the many interesting books that arrive in the Director postbag, my latest commute companion is Grit: The power of passion and perseverance. Written by American psychologist and MacArthur Fellowship recipient Angela Duckworth, it’s the result of over a decade’s research which proves that, more than pure talent, success is down to ‘grit’ – a formula of hope, effort, precision, passion, ritual and prioritisation. It’s positivity-plus and that’s something that the business leaders interviewed in this issue have in common.

Cover star Nicholas Coleridge not only runs the hugely successful international publishing firm Condé Nast (growing it during the industry’s most challenging time) he is also chair at the V&A, writes a novel a year and is launching a new e-commerce business this autumn. Read about his extraordinary career and leadership secrets here – I warn you, you may never have a long meeting again!

At the other end of the scale is remarkable young entrepreneur, Jordan Daykin (p40), who got investment for his business GripIt Fixings from Deborah Meaden of Dragons’ Den. His vision and values are inspiring but I was also fascinated by the mentoring he received – Duckworth stresses the importance of giving young people the right mixture of support to foster ‘grit’ – and Meaden seems to have got the balance just right. And, on p36, Thomas Dubaere, managing director of AccorHotels UK and Ireland, adds to the conversation by quoting Mandela on the magic of resilience – “the glory in rising every time you fall”.

Grit, the book, is a stimulating read, and ‘grit’ the quality is something you, the UK’s business leaders, have in spades. If you have a story of bouncing back after adversity that you would like to share with your peers, I’d love to hear it.

Have a great month!
