The new issue of Director magazine is out now. Editor Lysanne Currie previews what’s inside the April edition, which is ready to download now to Android, iPad and mobile, and sent in print to IoD members

I am writing at the end of one of my favourite events of the year – Advertising Week Europe – when the world’s media descends on central London to debate industry trends and issues. It’s a packed, vibrant, noisy time where brain cells get challenged as fascinating new themes emerge.

I went to the inaugural event – a panel at jazz club Ronnie Scott’s, chaired by David Pemsel, CEO of Guardian Media Group, discussing the UK’s drive to create new business ideas and back disruptive entrepreneurs. Asked how to bring that innovative energy into bigger businesses, founder of VC firm LocalGlobe, Saul Klein, replied: “However big or small
the organisation, great leadership is about clarity of purpose.”

It’s something cover star Jason Wouhra is very familiar with, as it was the sense of purpose shared by members of his family for their business, East End Foods, that helped drive its rise from cornershop to a dynamic £200m firm employing 400 people across the Midlands. And this purpose is now front of mind as the family looks to transform the business into a corporate powerhouse. Read his story on p26.

In a completely different industry, but with similar challenges, is London-based visual effects software firm, Foundry. Chief executive Alex Mahon explains its fascinating model for creating growth and how she keeps focus in a rapidly changing tech and entertainment industry (p32).
