A host of high-profile tech experts will address members at the institute’s 2017 digital strategy summit, covering hot topics such as data protection law, cyber-security, artificial intelligence, social media and cloud computing

The IoD’s upcoming digital strategy summit promises to be an essential event for any organisation looking to stay abreast of the latest IT trends and enhance its capabilities in this wide-ranging field.

Britons spend more time surfing the web than they do sleeping, according to figures published by Ofcom last autumn. Yet, despite our clear obsession with the internet, there are still about two million SMEs in the UK that either lack a website or have no social media presence. This is preventing them from reaching a wider audience of potential customers.

Many companies that do have an online presence, meanwhile, are still making rudimentary errors, especially when it comes to data protection. Indeed, almost half of the 866 members responding to an IoD survey in December 2016 admitted that they had no formal cyber-security strategy. To grasp the opportunities and mitigate the threats that exist in the digital jungle, many businesses clearly need to change their approach. The summit, to be held in London on 17 October, offers a welcome starting point from which to do this.

Some of the most dynamic digital brains leading innovations in this field will be speaking at the event, offering valuable insights in various keynote presentations and interactive workshops. Two of the speakers represent tech giants. Barnaby Voss, head of marketing for Google Cloud in the UK and Ireland, helps companies of all sizes to embrace cloud computing and “build what’s next”. And Jeremy Waite, IBM’s evangelist for EMEA, gives talks around the globe on how technology can help to “make the world a better place”. He has been named as one of the UK’s most influential social media marketers by Europe’s biggest marketing website, The Drum.

More speakers will be announced in due course for an event not to be missed.

The IoD digital strategy summit will take place at the Grange St Paul’s Hotel, London, on 17 October.
