‘Consider fixing the roof when it’s not raining’ – Nathan Warren, group director, Sanctuary Housing
A charitable housing and care provider operating in England and Scotland, Sanctuary Housing has been providing social housing, care homes, student accommodation and supported living services for the past four decades. Responsible for its commercial activities, Nathan Warren has overseen an increase in turnover from £135m to £700m-plus in his three and a half years as group director. He also chairs its equality and diversity working group. His award is for being the highest-scoring new Chartered Director in the exam and interview process. Here he talks about mentoring and motivation.
Who has inspired you most in business? I’ve been lucky in having many role models and mentors. They appear in all walks of life and have shaped my strong belief in sharing knowledge and supporting others.
What has been your biggest challenge and how have you overcome it? Some years ago I was diagnosed with a rare muscle-wasting disorder. I have become a positive role model in terms of disability awareness since then and I’m in a privileged position to influence our organisation’s equality agenda.
What’s the best business book you have read? The last one I read was John Kotter’s That’s Not How We Do it Here! The lesson I took was to always consider fixing the roof when it’s not raining.
Nathan Warren is a member of IoD West Midlands
