The Marmara Park Avenue is perfectly located for both business and leisure travellers to New York. As Alex Parker discovers, it offers jaw-dropping views of the Empire State Building nearby
When you enter any hotel room one of the first things you do is check out the view. The one that greeted me at the Marmara Park Avenue looked straight out towards the Empire State Building, a mere seven-minute walk away.
Although Marmara is best known for its luxury hotels dotted around Turkey, this is very much a five-star New York operation, right down to that view.
In fact, you could say the Marmara Park Avenue is a celebration of its location. This starts with the interiors by acclaimed local designer Joe Ginsberg right through to the luxury toiletries brought to you by that classic NY brand, CO Bigelow.
As you walk into the lobby you are immediately transported out of the hustle and bustle of the city and into a microclimate of calm and relaxation. The hotel’s soothing ‘signature scent’ and the roaring fire in the corner exude an air of subtle elegance.
However, this particular Marmara hasn’t totally abandoned its roots. The subterranean spa features a Turkish ‘hammam’, providing the ideal place to detox after a big night in the Big Apple and is available to all guests at no extra charge along with access to the swimming pool and gym.
The rooms, which are all distinctively different from each other, ooze luxury, pairing style with comfort.
There are a number of neat extra touches including a complimentary minibar and an iPad Air that comes loaded with movies, music and guides to the area. Rates start at around $200 (£163) for a guest room. But for the same price you can complete the New York experience by taking one of the studio lofts, which offer all the best aspects of staying in an apartment, complete with a kitchen.
For the business traveller, there are also a number of meeting rooms available onsite on request.
The Marmara Park Avenue ultimately succeeds by staying true to its locality – offering a refuge from the frenetic tempo of New York, while placing you right in the heart of the city.
