Some of the leading lights in UK business saw their work recognised on Friday 22 September at the IoD Director of the Year Awards.
The event, hosted by BBC business correspondent Joe Lynam, took place at the London Lancaster Hotel in the capital.
Welcoming the finalists, IoD director general Stephen Martin said: “Our awards seek to shine a light on directors who have enhanced and driven their businesses forward.
“The contenders come from different organisations – of varying shapes and sizes – but the one thing they all have in common is leadership, expertise and personal dedication.”
“During this critical period of political change, we will need to see ingenuity and tenacity displayed by professional leaders.
“The vibrancy and diversity of the businesses here today gives me cause to be hopeful of the strength of British industries.”
Among the winners were Ella’s Kitchen founder Paul Lindley, who took home the award for International Director of the Year; Moy Park chief executive Janet McCollum, awarded Large Company Director of the Year; and La Mare Vineyards managing director Tom Crowley, who took home the prize for SME Director of the Year.
The next generation of UK entrepreneurs was also celebrated with Marc Wileman, director of Sublime Science, crowned Young Director of the Year and Alex Gatehouse, co-founder of Pelico, recognised as Student Director of the Year.
A new Disability Employment award – recognising the director whose organisation has lead the way in working to recruit and retain disabled people – was presented to Mike Adams, CEO of Purple.
The overall IoD Director of the Year 2017 accolade was presented to Claire Horton, chief executive of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, who also took home the award in the Public & Third Sector category.
The awards, sponsored by the Centre for Board Excellence, and Nasdaq, brought together finalists from regional heats across the UK.
