Scottish Widows and Smart Pension launch campaigns to encourage auto-enrolment

Three years after the government launched its auto-enrolment campaign – heralded as the biggest revolution in UK pensions in 100 years – two new platforms have been launched in order to assist employers with the task of communicating the schemes more effectively to staff.

Start-up auto-enrolment firm Smart Pension has developed a free video generator for employers to convey pension communication more easily to workers.

It’s also available in Polish, to target the million-strong diaspora working in the UK. The two-minute video can be generated with English or Polish language voiceover, allowing companies to insert their own logos or contact details into the video.

Meanwhile, insurance group Scottish Widows offers a five-step programme for employers to promote the pension scheme to staff – A Plan for Communicating With Your Employees.

Downloadable items on the site include a two-minute ‘automatic enrolment’ video to ‘create a buzz’, a draft email template to inform employees about the scheme, a corporate pensions film and posters which could be put up around the workplace.

Such promotion of the schemes could be invaluable for some firms, as small companies offering pension provision must also “offer support and education” or risk being fined a £400 penalty.

“New pension reforms have made it mandatory for employers of even the smallest firms to not only offer a workplace pension but also to support and educate their staff through the process as well,” said Smart Pension managing director and co-founder Will Wynne.

“For many of the companies we work with, that’s two enormous burdens added to an already long to-do list. For many, it will be the first pension scheme they’ve ever had to deal with, even on a personal level, and likewise for some financial advisers, it might be the first time they’ve had to provide this kind of one-size-fits-all in-house education on behalf of clients.
