Director of the Year Awards – Aishah Selamat

Every day over the Christmas period, we’ll speak to winners from the recent IoD Director of the Year Awards. Today it’s Aishah Selamat, PhD researcher at Data Denizens, who won the Student award

‘Have a shared target to achieve as a team’

With a background in IT operations and project management, Selamat is studying for a doctorate in creative technology at Bournemouth University with a specialisation in big-data analytics. This has led her to come up with the idea for Data Denizens, which aims to help SMEs across Europe by making sense of their data for strategic decisions through a three-step process: “direct, deploy and decode”.

Who has inspired you most in business? “My parents. I started helping them in their food business when I was 13. Ever since then, I have had the entrepreneurial bug.”

Which business leader do you most admire? “Steve Jobs. The way he envisioned and developed Apple products has left a great impact on how we live our lives.”

Where do you get your best ideas? “While I’m travelling. My favourite destination is the Cliffs of Moher on Ireland’s west coast.”

Whom do you turn to for advice? “My long-time mentor, Norma Sit. Having a mentor is important for both professional and personal support.”

What’s the secret to building a great team? “It is crucial to have a shared target to achieve as a team. In addition, work hard and have fun together.”

What’s the essence of great leadership? “Delegation and empowerment. Done successfully, this matches the right people with the right skills to the right tasks.”
