Barcelo Sants – a business hotel with a twist in Barcelona

Barcelo Sants, the conference area

Looking for a business hotel with a twist in the Catalan capital? Barcelo Sants mixes the perfect location with interiors that might blow your mind

A tour around the Barcelo Sants hotel feels like stumbling through the sets of some of Stanley Kubrick’s most mind-boggling movies. While the large circular desk outside the main conference
hall could be a tribute to the war room in Dr Strangelove, it is the giant print of astronaut David Bowman, from 2001: A Space Odyssey, that dominates the wall in the reception area and sets the theme for the hotel.

The futuristic feel extends to the rooms, which the hotel prefers to call “orbitals”. Elsewhere, the restaurants are named Hydrogen and Oxygen and check-in is the “control desk”. But the overall effect is sleek, minimalist and pretty cool and the guests are more likely to be business than space travellers.

Barcelo Sants may not be the only place claiming to be “the best located hotel in Barcelona” but there is some substance to the sell. It was built on top of Sants station, Barcelona’s main rail hub. The journey by train from the airport takes just 15 minutes. It’s a mere five minutes from there to Plaça de Catalunya and just a short walk from both the city’s financial district and the Fira de Barcelona trade fair centre.

One of the useful features of the orbital suites is an informal meeting area adjoining the bedroom. There are business-rate discounts and reductions for the self-employed. All rooms come with the mod cons you would expect of a modern hotel, including an iPhone docking station and free WiFi. The standard orbitals are all reasonably proportioned and most come with a knockout view of the city. Given its proximity to the centre it would be criminal not to seize the opportunity to explore a city that regularly features in the polls of the top 10 most exciting places in the world to visit.

But if you are in Barcelona for a business trip, then Barcelo Sants will provide the ideal launchpad (sorry!) for your stay. Just be grateful the designer didn’t draw inspiration from the one Kubrick movie that was actually set in a hotel – The Shining.
