Pine Cliffs Devil's Parlour golf hole

Pine Cliffs Resort, a clifftop retreat in spectacular surroundings in the Algarve scores a hole in one for lovers of golf and gourmet food

Perched on the nose of one of the Algarve’s striking red sandstone cliffs, a golfer prepares to tee off from the par-three sixth hole aptly named the ‘Devil’s Parlour’. Poised and ready, the player swings effortlessly, sending the ball soaring 197 metres onto the narrow green, clearing the 60-metre ravine that separates the two.

This may sound like a missing scene from Goldfinger, but the golfers enjoying the award-winning nine-hole course at Pine Cliffs Hotel, a Luxury Collection Resort, are mere holidaymakers. Like them, Director enjoyed the comforting thwack of driver hitting ball while taking in the sun-kissed picturesque grounds of this newly renovated paradise on the outskirts of Albufeira.

Long days spent utterly carefree are topped off with a charming low-lit dinner of seafood cataplana – a traditional Portuguese dish comparable to paella – in the alfresco O Pescador restaurant, one of 11 on-site bar and eatery choices. Better still, sit down for dinner at sunset and marvel at the cliffs as they become illuminated to a searing red glow just a few metres from your table.

The indulgence will continue at bedtime as you retire to the brand new Pine Cliffs Ocean Suites, a complex of one- and two-bedroom apartments that ooze sophistication and style. Guests can also stay at the neighbouring Pine Cliffs Hotel (the entire Pine Cliffs resort spans 72 hectares of the coastline) and wake to a slice of history in a bed framed by azulejos, traditional hand-painted tiles that were fired in the kilns of Lisbon’s Fábrica de Cerâmica Constância.

But if you tire of golf and gourmet dinners, we recommend a peruse of the extensive treatment menu at Serenity The Art of Well Being spa with its 12 themed treatment rooms, followed by a superfood juice at the newly opened Zest health outlet. After all, holidays can be tough.
