To celebrate a long partnership with the world’s most famous spy, the luxury sportscar maker rolls out a special edition of its latest model – complete with Spectre Silver paint and 007 badging. Tiff Needell is impressed with the Aston Martin DB9 GT Bond Edition
It all began in 1964 when that silver DB5 appeared in Q’s workshop stacked full of gadgets. The machine guns, the tyre scythes, the revolving number plates and, of course, the ejector seat – Bond’s Aston Martin was born. Every schoolboy wanted the Corgi model and 2.5 million of them
were sold in just two years.
The film was Goldfinger, the third of the series of Bond films that has just released its 24th edition and, for the 12th time, an Aston Martin is one of 007’s co-stars.
Sean Connery drove the DB5 in both Goldfinger and the following year’s Thunderball before George Lazenby stepped into his shoes to drive an olive green DBS, which also appeared in Q’s workshop when Connery returned for the next film, Diamonds Are Forever. It would be 16 years and eight films before Timothy Dalton drove a V8 Vantage Volante in The Living Daylights.
Pierce Brosnan brought the faithful DB5 back for the first two of his four films and then drove a Vanquish in his last while, in the four Bond films since then, Daniel Craig has never been without an Aston. He has become so attached to the British sportscar that in Spectre he’s got his own limited-edition model – the DB10.
Aston built just 10 DB10s for the making of the film. How many of these survive the filming no one will say, but one thing is for sure, you can’t buy one.
You can, however, get close if you are lucky enough to get your hands on one of the 150 examples of the ‘Bond Edition’ of Aston’s most recent model, the DB9 GT. The DB9 has done Aston proud since this V12 flagship was launched in 2003. Various versions have come and gone, but it’s nearing the end of its reign with the much-awaited arrival of the DB11 next year, and the GT model looks like being the last.
Thirty more horsepower has been squeezed out of the faithful six-litre V12 and there’s a more modern interior, with items such as touch-sensitive console switchgear and a new navigation system screen but it’s very much an evolution model. Only a black front splitter and rear diffuser, reshaped headlights and tail-lamps, and a GT badge on the boot distinguish it from a regular DB9.
It’s all yours for £140,000 but add another £25,000 and you have the Bond Edition. Complete with Spectre Silver paint, sterling silver Aston Martin badges front and rear and discreet ‘007 Bond Edition’ exterior badges, heads will turn. Open the doors and you’re greeted with a unique numbered sill plaque complete with 007 logo, gun-barrel embroidery and a special Bond Edition start-up screen.
You get a dramatic-looking GT that still looks as fresh as the day it was launched and that V12 soundtrack which accompanies you wherever you go. It may be the end of an era, but the DB9 remains a true driver’s car that will put a smile on your face from the moment you plug the key into the ‘Emotional Control Unit’ and push to start. My only concern with the Bond Edition is that the price is wrong – surely £165,007 would look much better.
