With so many apps to choose from now, it can be tricky to work out which can add value. The IoD’s Information and Advisory Service suggests eight to download

With swathes of business apps available to download to your smartphone, it’s often difficult to decipher which ones will actually be of any benefit. With everything from apps that let you host video calls to taking meeting minutes, there are plenty to help busy directors keep ahead. Here, the IoD’s Information and Advisory Service (IAS) offers its best eight apps for business leaders…

Created in 2010 as cloud computing and mobility started to change the way people were conducting business, this app allows you to share presentations online, using 3G, 4G and WiFi – and then save them as PDFs in a secure content repository. No need to take a notepad to a meeting again!

Connect with colleagues around the world by using this video-calling app. You can talk one on one or create group discussions of up to 10 people. It enables voice-over calls, which are free to other Hangouts users, and lets you send people messages through the app as well.


This analytics app will transform your business data into eye-catching graphics that can be used when presenting to clients. Roambi will turn dull-looking statistics into a simple and engaging visual display, making the numbers easier to understand. The app also works in offline mode.


This app is a pocket whiteboard for your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. It takes your rough sketches and turns them into simple flow charts, and its editing feature allows you to include text, change fonts and add colour to enhance the look of the diagram. The app also lets you share your diagrams with colleagues by email and via the web.


Make short, professional-looking videos with this app, just using your iPhone. It gives you ideas for videos on all sorts of topics – from testimonials to how-tos – taking you step by step through the process. The app has simple editing features and makes it easy for you to share the videos on social media or other websites. 



A hybrid task management app that is designed to enable teamwork without having to use email. You can easily add multiple projects and project goals, and track the progress of your whole team. With conversations and tasks in one place, this app makes it easier to work out what needs to be done.


This one-stop shop for management is a suite of social collaboration and communication tools. It creates an internal social network, allows you to delegate and co-ordinate projects, communicate using video or group chat, organise documents, and share files and calendars.



This is an online back-up tool, allowing you to store almost everything on your phone – from files and documents to photos and music. Even if you lose your phone, everything is protected so that nobody can peek at your private files.

The IAS provides IoD members with free business intelligence and advice to help them run their companies more efficiently and successfully.
