A luxury mini-break, which includes a three-night trip to Casona Granado in Andalucia, including travel, awaits one lucky reader and their guest

At the centre of the traditional village of El Pilar, in the remote hills of south-eastern Andalucia, lies the Casona Granado, an award-winning eight-room hotel that blends bucolic charm with modern design.

Director’s exclusive competition offers one lucky reader and their guest a three-night stay here on a bed-and-breakfast basis; two return tickets from Gatwick to Almería; and transfers between the airport and the hotel.

Having been neglected for many years, Casona Granado has recently been lovingly restored to encapsulate the unspoilt beauty of rural Spain. Guests can soak up views of the sweeping countryside through the large windows of their ensuite rooms or stroll through the quaint little village, whose properties are all whitewashed in the traditional Andalucian style.

The hotel’s acclaimed restaurant, Albar, serves the very best of rustic Spanish cuisine and plays a valuable role in the community, hosting events that showcase the cultural traditions of El Pilar. With a celebrated menu that changes with the seasons, Albar uses high-quality ingredients from local suppliers and its own garden to deliver the authentic taste of Andalucia.

Despite its rural location, El Pilar is within easy reach of the historic city of Almería; the unspoilt sandy beaches of Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park; and the picturesque villages of Lubrín, Mojácar and Sorbas by car. The hotel offers group or private excursions, including foraging walks, cave tours and visits to local attractions, such as a pottery and a mountaintop shrine. It can also recommend scenic routes for cyclists and hikers of all levels of fitness and ability. But you may well want to just kick back, pick up a book and listen to the birdsong here. After all, guests at Casona Granado do tend to find it’s the perfect place to simply stop and disconnect from their hectic working lives for a few precious days.
