One month into 2012 and two themes are emerging above all others – the first is the seismic shift towards responsible capitalism. Of course, we need our companies to make money but it is something to be celebrated that businesses are beginning to put the good of society at their core. And it makes business sense, too – the inspirational Kevin Roberts, chief executive worldwide of Saatchi & Saatchi, blogged recently about "warriors vs athletes", saying it is the warriors with purpose who will survive as opposed to the athletes who are just in it to win. Food for thought indeed.

The second trend that I have noticed gathering momentum is collaboration. I had a long discussion with PR legend Lynne Franks about the importance of working together in these tough times and how she has seen the growth of collaboration in her sector. She shares her wisdom in My Business Life. This month's cover star Mark McCafferty also prides himself on teamwork and, as chief executive of Premiership Rugby, has worked hard to help the clubs to their commercial success.
