From the editor

As we go to print, the country is still reeling from the worst riots for 30 years, the chancellor has warned that economic recovery will "take longer and be harder than expected" and the eurozone is in crisis. We could buckle under the gloom but since taking up the role as editor of Director, the one thing that shines through is the resilience, creativity and optimism of British businesses. And it is those qualities that I hope you will see reflected in this newly refreshed and redesigned magazine.

We have introduced a news section to keep you up to date with the latest technology, products, social media, company and investment news. We've previewed the best new business books, TV documentaries and events to whet your appetite; Fifth Gear's Tiff Needell is our new motoring columnist; and the IoD's chief economist Graeme Leach gives his view on the economic trends affecting your business.

We've expanded our People section so that you, the UK's key business leaders, can share ideas with and be inspired by your peers. This month I interviewed Dee Forbes, executive vice president and managing director of Discovery Networks, Western Europe, who recalled the enormous pan-European restructure she undertook only six months into the role and talks about her pride that the UK TV industry is becoming a major provider of global content. We also have our regular Partnerships slot, plus interviews with directors who are challenging the status quo and wise words from leaders who have survived (and even thrived in) previous recessions.

There are two new sections – Expert is home to comprehensive reports on niche subjects that matter to business. And Escape looks further afield – profiling companies that have expanded internationally and talking to directors who have got it right. Plus, we have suggestions for great R&R breaks, fantastic long-haul holidays and the best restaurants for business.

My hope is that you will find Director informative, entertaining and inspirational. I look forward to hearing your views.

Lysanne Currie
