Lindkvist argues that we have just lived through the most extraordinary decade. While we never know what's going to happen next, at the turn of the millennium few would have predicted such events as 9/11, the war on terror, or the 2008 financial crash.
He asserts that we are turning frequently to the adjective "unexpected" to describe events. While there are plenty of negatives about things being unexpected, the intention here is to focus on the upsides. The human condition is to prefer routine, but there are positive aspects to unexpected things, for individuals and companies. But we must train ourselves to interpret events properly and be open to beneficial possibilities.
This is an engaging, approachable and almost bite-sized read, but it manages to deliver thought-provoking content. There's a less than helpful board game at the end of each chapter, which is best ignored, and I'm not a fan of books designed with magazine-style pull quotes. But these quibbles aside, this title is well worth investigating. Who knows, you might find something unexpected in it.
