Clash of the giants: Apple Vs Dell
by Richard Cree

How the Apple iPhone 4 and Dell Streak shape up in a head to head comparison

Apple iPhone 4
What's the fuss? Immediate attention focused on the gorgeous new touchscreen and the huge improvement to its camera (now a decent 5MP, and with LED light and HD video), but this latest incarnation of Apple's iPhone is also pitched at business users. Improvements such as multi-tasking and better integration with email systems, such as Microsoft Exchange, mean it is a more complete smartphone than Apple's previous offerings. The facelift refreshes its dashing good looks and boosts desirability.

Any geeky details? Although this is a smaller, slimmer phone it offers hugely improved battery life, including an alleged seven hours talk time and 40 hours standby. A glass case aims to improve signal quality.

And drawbacks? The integrated antenna around the edge of the phone causes a loss of signal when held in a certain way.

Dell Streak
What's the fuss? Although it arrived on the shelves a few weeks before the iPhone 4, Dell's Streak is intended to fill a new market segment. It's bigger than a smartphone but smaller than a tablet. With Apple launching its iPad as a new group between netbooks and PDAs, this part of the market is getting quite confused. But Dell views the Streak as an Android tablet that also functions as a phone.

Any geeky details? The massive (for something that fits in your pocket) 5in touchscreen sets this apart from its rivals. It also includes a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor and, thanks to fast HSDPA link speeds, offers great Web browsing.

And drawbacks? Users might feel a little stupid talking into something this big. And the Android 1.6 operating system is a little dated, but a new version is due out later in the year.
