The China Strategy: Harnessing the power of the world's fastest-growing economy, by Edward Tse
Basic Books, £15.99

The great China debate continues to rage. Is it the next big bubble or the great miracle of our age? Scary statistics, such as the fact that China is building 34 airports the size of Heathrow, suggest the latter. Tse is a cheerleader for this camp.

His book is full of figures suggesting China's maturity as a nation of consumers and entrepreneurs. Tse states that outsiders seek to understand the scale and intensity of China. It's a population of 1.3 billion people, but Tse claims the intensity of that population, which he explains as "the ferocious entrepreneurial energy and productivity emerging in every part of the country", will have the bigger impact. The Chinese, he says, wish to regain their "rightful place on the world stage".

Tse's focus is on large companies looking to enter China or compete with Chinese firms, but there is a great deal here for any director looking to engage in some way with the nation. Tse spotlights the opportunities presented by entrepreneurial China. Anyone seeking warnings of the bubble should look elsewhere.
