Martha Lane Fox, chairman, Antigone and Lucky Voice
by Tina Nielsen

I am back. I am a non-executive director with Channel 4 and Marks & Spencer and a director with Mydeco, in addition to my work with Lucky Voice [private karaoke] and my charity, Antigone.

It's a long time since Lastminute.com. Someone recently introduced me as "dotcom dinosaur Martha Lane Fox" and that brought it home.
I am irreparably changed after my car accident in May 2004, but it reinforced the importance of my friends and family and trying to make an impact on the world.

I love Marks & Spencer. It is a British institution. I think everybody in this country has a relationship with M&S.

Brent Hoberman interviewed me for my first job. He didn't want to give me the job, but luckily he could see that I wasn't a complete moron and we made firm friends.

I was lucky to work with Brent. Not only is he a savvy businessperson, but he is a kind and generous human being and that is probably far more important.

My decade with lastminute.com was a rollercoaster. Some of it was surreal, some of it was a nightmare, some of it was great fun. I met some amazing people and I feel very lucky that I had the experience.

The Web encouraged ownership by everybody in the organisation. I think we made 10 to 20 millionaires at Lastminute.com and you wouldn't have been able to do that 50 years ago.

Lucky Voice is all about singing together. It's lovely to sing in a group-it makes you feel great-and I like businesses that make people feel happy and passionate.

What I like most about business is meeting interesting people, having a great team to work with and just being engaged with lots of different types of people.

If you have had the luck to make some money you have an absolute responsibility to feed some of that back into society.
It is very sad if business becomes just about making money.

Antigone gives grants to causes I am passionate about and helps them, not just with money, but more importantly with contacts and networking.

I am a trustee of Reprieve, which gives legal help to people who face the death penalty or torture and don't have lawyers. I deeply believe that whatever someone has done, they should be properly represented.

I want to be part of a society where people stand up for what they believe in, are prepared to speak out for the most vulnerable in society and are ready to make compromises in their life to help others.

We need more women in business. It is absolutely disgraceful there aren't similar numbers of men and women on FTSE-100 boards, and the pay gap between men and women is a disgrace.

Martha Lane Fox will be speaking at the IoD Women as Leaders conference on October 2. For details, visit www.iod.com/events.
