Getting there BA, EasyJet and Iberia all operate daily flights from London airports, while Ryanair also flies from a number of regional airports, to Madrid Barajas, which has good metro and bus connections to the city centre. The 13km drive should take less than half an hour if you hop in a taxi.
Business climate Madrid attracts international companies in most sectors. The city is also a leader in scientific and technological research.
Don't miss A walk in the Retiro Park. Madrid's huge and beautifully kept public gardens are a favourite escape for Madrileños. Plaza Mayor in old Madrid is the perfect spot for people-watching, while shoppers should head to the exclusive Salamanca neighbourhood for the best designer stores.
Etiquette The working day is still severed in half by a long lunch break—business hours might be 9am to 2pm and 4pm to 7pm—although many larger companies now work through the day. Dinner often takes place after 10pm. A basic grasp of Spanish is useful, and often appreciated, as not everybody speaks English to a high standard. Avoid Madrid in August when the heat is unbearable. Everything closes as locals head for the coast.
Culture Madrid has some excellent museums and art lovers shouldn't miss the "cultural triangle" of the Prado, the Thyssen and the Reina Sofia. Catch a flamenco show with a glass of sherry at legendary Casa Patas or watch Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium—if you can get hold of a ticket.
Where to stay Hotel Puerta de America offers stunning rooms, all designed by famous names, including Zaha Hadid and Norman Foster. Although the location near the airport isn't great, the hotel is a must for architecture fans. Or you can stay at the luxurious ME Madrid Reina Victoria, bang in the centre, on Plaza Santa Ana. Previously the favourite of visiting bullfighters, the hotel has been spruced up recently and offers plush rooms and fine dining.
Eat like a local International cuisine is becoming increasingly popular, but for classic Castilian food go to Casa Lucio near Plaza Mayor. El Bocaíto in the Chueca area is one of the best for top-class tapas.
