Neat, portable and more versatile than a PDA. Joe Svetlik tries out the latest ultra-mobile computers
Samsung Q1 Ultra
At 7in, and weighing less than two pounds, this Samsung has the joint-largest screen on test and it looks great, too. The only issue is the standard QWERTY keyboard may take some getting used to, being split either side of the screen. If you can get past that, the great screen makes this an awesome ultra-mobile PC.

T-Mobile Ameo
This looks like a laptop that's shrunk in the wash. Sadly, you can't tilt the screen to avoid glare when attached to the keyboard. But it does have WiFi, and a keyboard that's among the best here. You can disconnect the screen and use it to scroll Web pages, although this feature is really only for gimmick freaks.

OQO Model E2
One of the tougher models, the E2 comes with a shock-mounted hard drive or with flash memory, which is resistant to knocks as there are no moving parts. WiFi's here as standard, and the 5in screen isn't bad. There's also a neat addition for Web browsing: a small touchpad to scroll with using your thumb.

Asus EEE PC
Another 7in mini laptop, the EEE PC uses flash storage, so you won't lose your files should it take a knock. It's the cheapest here, and while the keys are close together, it's fine as long as you're not writing a novel. The max 8GB storage isn't huge. But for kids and businessmen on a budget, it's superb.

HTC Shift
Like a number of ultra-mobile PCs, this can be used as both a tablet or a mini laptop, although the keys are so small that you might consider typing with a toothpick. Windows Vista runs slowly, and the touchpad is unresponsive. A decent 7in screen can't save this from being an also-ran.

Nokia N810
The N810 is an internet tablet built for surfing the Web. Its keyboard, although cramped, is great for emails, and the on-board GPS shows where you are, in case you don't know. The 4in touchscreen is good for its size, and there's a Webcam, too. Fewer features than some, but ideal for getting online on the move.
