Shanghai city survival guide

Getting there Virgin and BA fly direct, Cathay Pacific will get you there via Hong Kong.

Where to stay The newly-renovated Mansion Hotel is definitely worth seeking out. As the former business address of notorious mob boss Huang Jinrong, this five-storey, 30-room boutique residence offers old-fashioned opulence around every corner: from the Art Deco-infused lobby to the grand rooftop lounge: 1920s Shanghai all over again.

Business climate The city is certainly booming, having recorded double-digit growth for the past 14 consecutive years. But a fierce rivalry with fellow finance hub Hong Kong, where GDP is almost five times higher, leaves Shanghai with some catching up to do.

Ice breaker Shanghai's commercial hub is Pudong, which forms the city's iconic skyline. In 1990, the area was largely agricultural. Today, Pudong enjoys a GDP of $25bn.

Etiquette If you are meeting a large group, don't be surprised if everyone starts clapping as soon as you enter the room—this is simply a respectful greeting.

Eat like a local Shanghai cuisine tends to focus on the sweet rather than the sour, but the huge variety of restaurants should sate most palates. Try the shark's fin soup at Fu Lin Men, on the second floor of the Pudong Shangri-La hotel (+86 021 6882 8888).
